Today while the grade threes were outside enjoying Carnaval, the grade twos and I were inside designing and building castles. Wow! What fun! I am over the moon excited about their ability to talk about 3D figures and to create such masterpieces. If I was Queen, I'd be happy to live in one of their castles. Check them out- don't be afraid to ask questions of your child. What figure did you use most? Which figures stack, roll, slide? Find/point out different 3D shapes and their edges, faces and vertices.

Tangrams
Sorry for any confusion- 1ooth day is this Friday! Students are asked to dress up like themselves at 100 years old. It should be interesting to watch everyone do Zumba with their costumes/outfits on!
Today we worked with Tangrams. I read the book featured below to the class and they were excited to try and make the various items it mentioned- a cat, a candle, a house, etc. They were a creative bunch. In the end, everyone was asked to try and make a square out of all seven tangram pieces. So far, no one has figured it out. Some students were close but the challenge continues tomorrow! Take a look at the creations below. Can you guess what they were making?

Frozen
Hi everyone!
As I start to type this I feel like this snow has been brought on by our theme day of Frozen. What a fun day it has been. We even had Elsa and Ana at our assembly this morning. Congratulations to Noah who won the character ed award for Honesty. I think the kids were glad I didn't sing 'Let it go,' - however, the day is not done yet... ( I wrote this during the day, clearly I didn't get a chance to finish the post...)
This has been a fast week! We continue to work on our dinosaur reports. They are coming together nicely. We will start our final best draft next week. We have been working through the writing process with this research project. From collecting jot notes to writing the polished final. I know that we have all learned so much already. The dinosaurs were/ are so fascinating. Our next step will be to make videos of what we learned.
We have finished up our mass and capacity unit as well. We worked with a lot of different kinds of measures these last few weeks. Students had a chance to measure their shoe perimeter and the area inside using small and big blocks. We compared the capacity of containers using a variety of math tools (blocks, dominoes, foam dice).
ZUMBA- We start Zumba next Friday. Please make sure that you have signed the permission form and returned the fee of $4.oo. If you have any questions please let me know.
100th Day- According to my calculations the 100th day of learning is Monday, Feb. 9. Our class and some of the other primary classes are going to celebrate one hundred days of learning on Friday, Feb. 6. We will be doing a variety of themed activities, but I'd like you to help your child dress up like how they think they would look at 100! The class and I will be talking about this on Monday, but I wanted to give you a heads up. I think it will be really funny to see everyone all dressed up as 100 year olds!
Dance-a-thon- Thursday, Feb. 12. Did you get a pledge sheet?
That's all for now. Just a reminder that tomorrow is a PD Day. Enjoy your weekend!

Cardinals to brighten the hallway
Welcome Monday!
Last week your child might have told you that they were creating yet another masterpiece. Our cardinals are up and they look fantastic. We used paint as our medium this time around. We worked on staying in the lines and combining foreground and background (branches, bird and snow). I'm getting used to anticipating being astounded, and this time the kids didn't disappoint. Take a look below at their works of art!

Welcome 2015
Hi everyone!
Welcome to a new year! I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday with your families. It was really great to see the kids back the last two days. We didn't have a full class on Monday due to the 'snow day' and some lingering illnesses. For those students who did make it in on Monday we talked about New Year's resolutions, listened to a story and created our own goals for 2015. I will post a photo of our craftiness ( I forgot to do so today before heading home).
The weather seems to be set on just being frigid. Please make sure you send your child with all their warm outdoor wear. It doesn't hurt to put an extra pair of socks and mitts in their backpacks if you have some available. Believe it or not some kids head outside with no mitts or hats. They are reminded to wear everything they were sent with!
We are back in the swing of all things grade two and three. Tomorrow is Jersey Day and we hope that the forecasted winter storm doesn't stop some of the Barrie Colts from joining us. Our school will have a 'Pine River Patriots' night at the Barrie Molson Centre later this month. Members of the choir will be singing 'O Canada' and we will have seats available for purchase for the school community.
Literacy- we are still working on advancing our reading skills, word attack strategies and gaining a deeper understanding of the text we read. Reading groups are working on a variety of skills from Author's message to making significant connections to what we read. We are working in groups to write a 'morning message' to the rest of the class which is helping us remember what a sentence needs. We will begin working on report writing and using jot notes in the weeks to come.
Math- we are working on telling time using an analog clock. Today was the first day we have done this and overall I was impressed. Students are encouraged to practise this skill at home as well. We will also be measuring temperature, perimeter and area.
Social Studies- grade three students are still going to Mr. Poole and joining the other grade threes for their lessons. They are learning about Urban and Rural communities. Grade Two students are looking at New Year celebrations around the world. This unit will also be tied into our language block. We will also begin looking at (basic) family trees and some of our own family traditions and celebrations.
Science- as you may be aware, Mrs. Kelly has gone off on maternity leave. Mr. Powell will take over the reigns and start teaching the students science this week. He will be checking in with their understanding of Forces (Gr.3) and Movement and Simple Machines (Gr.2) before beginning a new unit.
Art- keep an eye for our 'snowflake' pictures to come home. They were truly remarkable and I hope that you can find a special place to keep them.
I think that's all for now- bit of a long winded blog update!
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Cheers,
Ms.Rogers

And then there were five...
Hi everyone,
Thanks for checking in.
Well Friday is winding down and next week I'm sure will be a blur. First things first, we have had a busy week. Grade Two students are learning about holiday celebrations around the world - don't be surprised if you hear them humming "Driedel, driedel, driedel" tonight when they come home. We played a game that is commonly played at Hanukkah time. Yesterday we learned about SinterKlaas and Zwarte Piet from the Netherlands. Next week we will explore traditions from Italy, England, Mexico and Australia. Grade Three students were comparing the life of a city mouse and a country mouse.
In Math, we started exploring measurement. Ask your child the difference between non-standard and standard measurements. We used a plastic stick to measure classroom items and then we used a paper metre stick (thank you IKEA) to measure the same things using centimetres.
In literacy, we have been reading all about Scaredy Squirrel and how he prepares for Christmas. Being a scared squirrel who is afraid of germs and strangers really presents a problem at this holiday time! The kids planned out a gingerbread house (just like Scaredy Squirrel, but his was "better than code") and designed all sides. They then had to work with a partner to develop a procedure for building the gingerbread house. Some students were videoing and making movies of their procedure and others were typing it.
Our Christmas Character day was very successful. Lots of elves, some Santas and a few toy helpers. Thank you for helping your child come up with a costume. I 'may' have been an elf myself!
Our play is on Tuesday, Dec.16 at 6:30pm and 11 am. Please send your child's costume with them on Monday if possible. If not, then please make sure it is here for our morning performance on Tuesday! The kids have really worked hard (thanks for encouraging them at home) and it definitely shows. I am excited for them to 'break a leg' on Tuesday. We will do one final practise on Monday before taking the stage on Tuesday!
Enjoy your weekend,
Cheers,
Ms. Rogers

Happy Monday!
Hi everyone,
Just a quick update- thanks to those of you who let me know you received my email last week. If you didn't get an email, please send me one at arogers@scdsb.on.ca and I'll add you to the list!
I can't believe we have 9 days till Christmas break. Wow! Unbelievable how time flies. These next two weeks are quite busy. We have been practicing our lines for our play. The Holiday Moosical is on Tuesday, Dec. 16. There is a performance at 11 am, and an evening one at 6:30. I know that there have been notes in the agenda about this performance for a couple weeks now, but a permission form came home today that needs to be returned in order for the kids to participate at the night show. Also on that note was some suggestions for costumes. Costumes just need to be simple. The class and I will try and create some of the extras that might be needed. I don't want you to have to go out and buy things for make your child's costume. Any questions or suggestions please email me.
Colour House Days- This Friday is "Christmas Character Day" Students may dress up as characters from books or movies, or really anything Christmas themed. For example they could be the Grinch, Cindy-Loo Who, etc. The next Friday is Red & Green Day.
Cheers,
Ms. Rogers
